Case Studies for the HiFlo Group in the Waitaki, Mackenzie & Canterbury Districts
Since HiFlo began back in 1971, we’ve made it our mission to provide quality solutions in a timely manner to all our clients. No matter how unique your needs are, we use our encyclopaedic knowledge of all things plumbing, gas fitting and heating to get you the result you deserve.
This free range chicken farm south of Moeraki required continuous, reliable heating for its four new rearing sheds containing 30,000 chicks each. HiFlo Group was required to design an LPG heating system for each shed which needed to be cost effective and reliable.
It became the largest single project Hi-Flo had undertaken in a three year time-frame and included design and install of stormwater and tank water systems.
Each of the four buildings are 200 metres long and 30 metres wide and required extensive gas line reticulation. Multiple LPG bottle supply points were reticulated throughout the large space, from the rear of the building. Continuity of supply to the rearing sheds heaters was critical. Extensive stormwater works were also required including underground water pipe systems and earthworks.
HiFlo Groups action plan included:
Gasfitting:
Design a cost effective LPG heating system for the purpose and location.
Ensure it is able to be accessed, serviced and maintained easily for continuous supply.
Water Tanks & Pressure Pipe Systems:
Install 12 x 30,000 litre water tanks, pump sheds and control systems within a tight time frame.
Undertake the electrofusion welding of PE pipework and jointing. This is 100’s of kilometres of pipe work from 100mm diameter to 32mm.
Ensure the pipeworks are fit for purpose and capacity
Install water pumping equipment and controls
Stormwater Systems:
Hi-Flo’s largest single stormwater project
Required the install of a large network of underground pipeworks and pump houses.
Worked extensively with earthworks contractors to save on project costs
The end result is the largest, most energy efficient poultry raising plant in the South Island. This multi million dollar new build was a three year project which will have a sound return on investment for its owners. The new energy efficient sheds will save on long term operating costs for the owners. As well as provide a healthier more comfortable environment for raising chicks.
Project management team Flanders Marlow of Dunedin were well impressed with HiFlo Groups capabilities throughout the large scale rural services build.
The Lindis Group
— Lindis Lodge
By far the most technical project undertaken in the company’s history, Hi Flo Group had to scope, design and install heating, plumbing, and drainage systems throughout a $20million luxury lodge project in the Ahuriri Valley, South Canterbury.
This included an entire underground geo-thermal pipe system to power radiators, underfloor heating and heat pumps throughout.
Located in beautiful rugged ranges 900 metres above sea level meant they had to deal with problematic climate extremes.
The lodge itself is architecturally designed to mimic the rolling high country hills. The undulating design of curved roofs and the need for longer flue runs, required Hi-Flo to work closely with appliance manufacturers to meet unique specifications. The shape of the building meant many hours of pre-work shop drawings and project management to ensure agreement on best methods and standards.
HiFlo Group’s action plan included:
Geothermal Heating:
An entire bespoke engineered system with boiler boost for energy efficient heat pumps, underfloor heating and radiator heat.
Installation of 100’s of metres of underground pipework requiring four 20metre x 12 metre trenches.
Extend pipeworks to the three, mirrored glass accommodation pods a considerable distance from the main lodge.
Plumbing & Gasfitting:
5 x luxury rooms to the highest of standards
1 x large commercial kitchen
2 x plant rooms
5 x Escea Gas Fires for rooms
1 x Escea Gas Fire & Spartherm Wood Fire for main living room
Design and install an LPG bottle station with reticulated gas lines consisting of 200 to 300 metres of pipework to the lodge and accommodation pods.
Drainage:
Design and install the Natural Flow, environmentally safe septic tank system to serve the entire lodge. This uses worms as part of a bioremedial effluent management system and results in very limited wastewater discharge.
The end result is a stunning contemporary wood and stone luxury lodge in a breathtaking natural landscape that was awarded top honours at the World Architecture Festival 2019.
HiFlo Group are proud to have been chosen for this award winning destination build. HiFlo director Peter Ryder says the project management team were positive about HiFlo Groups role and displayed full confidence in its general design and scoping results.
Simons Pass
— Dairy BIOGas Project
Simons Pass Station in the MacKenzie Basin wanted to convert its dairy effluent into methane gas to generate electricity for its farm. This 9700 ha dairy holding needed comprehensive, fail safe means of collecting and converting the natural methane gases.
HiFlo Group was approached to help with the installation of gas lines from the biogas ponds to the massive gas operated generator. The effluent methane conversion is the second such large scale project in the South Island. It needed to provide enough electricity to power the farm’s plant, office and workers accommodation.
HiFlo Groups action plan included:
Design and install around 500metres of underground reticulated gas pipeworks from holding ponds to generator
Design and install a backup LPG gas supply which can kick in to power the generator in the event of failure.
The end result is a fully operational methane gas conversion plant for a busy dairy holding. And biogas technology that creates enough megawatts of electricity to power daily operations. One which is environmentally sustainable and cost effective on an industrial scale.
Mitre 10 Mega
— Oamaru
Mitre 10 New Zealand engaged HiFlo Group to project manage the install of civil drainage, stormwater, plumbing & gasfitting in its new $18m mega store in Dee Street, Oamaru.
The project site was subject to heritage interests. The plumbing fit-out required overhead installs and an overarching health and safety focus required strict adherence and sign off.
HiFlo Groups action plan included:
Compiling comprehensive on site health & safety procedures and protocol for multi trade teams on a tight timeframe
Install all plumbing and gas fittings in the 6000 sq m site as well as civil drainage works
Work closely with Heritage Property New Zealand geologists in recovering items of interest during excavation. The site had formerly been occupied by the North Otago Brewery.
The multi trade team approach to this megastore project resulted in better operational flow. Plenty of pre-scope agreement was required between trades on site simultaneously. And despite delays from heritage recovery and a nationwide lockdown, the project was successfully completed to the clients’ commercial specifications and authorised consents.
Gilchrist Builders
— Architectural New Home
A high-end architectural home being built in North Otago required a plumber gasfitter with a high standard of workmanship and experience.
The Moynihan’s home by Gilchrist Builders approached HiFlo Group knowing they could rely on their expertise.
“This is a spectacular home with many architectural features. The clients had very high standards of finish and performance,”
— Peter Ryder of Hi Flo Group
HiFlo Groups action plan included:
Design and install radiator heating throughout and underfloor.
Install the diesel fired boiler to power it
Supply and install high spec plumbing fittings for a beautiful home
Mains water supply pumping and water tank systems
Design and install 180m of sewer and wastewater reticulation
The builder’s client was thrilled with their new dream home. HiFlo Group delivered on all fronts and formed a close working relationship with the client and the trades.
“We are consistently involved in new home builds throughout Waitaki, Mackenzie and North Otago,” says Peter Ryder of HiFlo Group. “We pride ourselves on our very high standards of workmanship and knowledge.”
